An Open Letter to Myself

Dear College Graduate:

You did it. You’ve worked hard for four years and you’re finally at your very first graduation. You never had a ceremony for transitions throughout your childhood and you never went to public school. Yet here you are, after baffling all of the college admissions workers and proving your dedication and excellence to those who didn’t expect it from you. Congratulations.

You may feel like you’re overwhelmed with nostalgia and bitterness. Being one of the relatively small group left on campus does come with a kind of empty, eery feeling. Take heart, for you’ve been blessed with many gatherings to say goodbye-for-now.

You may feel like comparing yourself to others, judging your own accomplishments and your future to theirs. You may also feel like you’re not popular or that your unique journey at this college was not as special as others. Chin up, and look more closely. Genuine, sweet hearts have taken care to tell you that you have touched them with joy and that they will miss you very much. That should mean more than going to all the parties.

You may not have had the stereotypical success of being a theatre student, but you have brought smiles to children and brought people to tears by following your heart and making your own path of experiences.

You may not have the most supportive family (sometimes by choice and sometimes by ability), but you have been provided for and you have been held when you thought you would fall apart. Attend to those friendships, for they are worthwhile.

You may have to work harder to support yourself alone, you may need time to yourself, and you are allowed to spend time to grow as an individual. Everyone’s path is different. Appreciate this past - the joy, the memories, and the people it brought you. Embrace the future - you’ll find a way to grow as only you can, just as you’ve done all along.

Now flash that smile that brings joy to others, soak up the sunshine, and be grateful for everyone and everything.
